Pekhon Diocese Celebrates Two Pillars: Parish Feast and Bishop’s Anniversary

The Diocese of Pekhon marked a double celebration on June 29, honoring both the feast of St. Peter, patron saint of Han Bu Parish, and the second anniversary of the episcopal ordination of Bishop Felice Bahtoo, the Local Ordinary of Pekhon Diocese.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Bishop Felice, surrounded by 21 priests, with approximately 800 faithful participating in this special occasion at Han Bu Parish.

The Holy Mass was specially offered for the faithful living in Han Bu Parish, especially the priests, religious nuns, and catechists who are zealously and enthusiastically working in the parish.

A Priceless Gift

June 29 is also a day of great joy for the Diocese of Pekhon, for through the mercy and goodness of God, in 2024, the diocese received a priceless gift—Bishop Felice Bahtoo as a coadjutor bishop, who was officially installed as the Local Ordinary on February 2, 2026.

In his homily, the bishop stressed the apostolic pastoral ministries of Sts. Peter and Paul, and kindly reminded all the faithful to live out their faith professed during Baptism and Confirmation.

“As Peter and Paul, after encountering Christ, lived out their faith without hesitation and counting nothing as their own, so we, having freely received, should freely give for the Lord of the harvest,” Bishop Felice said.

A Parish Born in Challenging Times

Han Bu Parish was established in 2019 by Bishop Peter Hla (Emeritus), who began the process in 2018. The total population of the parish is approximately 2,730, with 457 households.

The parish has been affected by the crises, but the situation is now stable. Many of the faithful from Pekhon and Mobye parishes have also taken refuge in this parish as internally displaced persons fleeing from their homeland.

The celebration highlighted the resilience of the Catholic community in Pekhon Diocese, which continues to grow despite the challenges of conflict and displacement. The presence of displaced families from neighboring parishes served as a reminder of the Church’s mission to welcome and accompany those who have been forced to leave their homes.

A Shared Meal

After the Mass, all those who participated in this special occasion shared Kayan traditional porridge, a gesture of communion and solidarity that reflected the spirit of the celebration.

The gathering was a testament to the unity and perseverance of the faithful in Pekhon Diocese, who continue to find strength in their faith and in their community despite the hardships they have endured.

The double celebration—honoring the patron saint of the parish and the bishop’s anniversary—served as a powerful reminder of the foundations upon which the Church is built: the apostolic witness of Sts. Peter and Paul, and the ongoing ministry of shepherds who lead their flocks with faith and dedication.
