Renewal Training for Catechists Concludes with Commissioning of Three in Pathein Diocese

The 58th Renewal Formation Training for Catechists concluded on May 12 with a Holy Mass during which three catechists received their vestments and appointment letters, marking their formal commissioning for service.
The 6:00 a.m. Eucharistic celebration at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church was presided over by Bishop Henry Eikhlein, joined by eight concelebrating priests. Brothers, sisters, catechists, and the faithful gathered in prayer for the ceremony.

Homily: Sent to Preach the Gospel
In his homily, Bishop Henry reflected on Mark 16, where Jesus sends out His disciples to preach the Gospel. He noted that the training and sending ceremony is held annually, and he thanked all the priests, teachers, and officials who led the sessions.
“The catechists work together with the priests and faithfully carry out the religious service,” he said. “The priests and catechists are the ones who contribute greatly to the Church.”
The bishop connected the ceremony to the end of the Easter season, noting that with the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Passover season of 2026 has come to an end.

“Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to be sent to renew the face of the earth on this occasion,” he said. “Through that Spirit, the clergy and catechists will stand firm in the faith and faithfully carry out their ministry.”
Quoting from Romans, he asked: “How can they preach unless someone sends them? How can they hear unless someone preaches? How can they believe unless someone hears?” He emphasized the importance of missionary work, urging the catechists to “preach the Gospel with the power of the Spirit.”

Commissioning of Three Catechists
At the ceremony, three catechists received their robes and appointment letters: Ms. Rose Mary Ma Hnin Si, Ms. Helen Nant Tin Zar Win, and Ms. Eri Ta.

Training and Preparation
The 58th Renewal Formation Training was attended by a total of 74 catechists. The program was held from May 4 to May 8 at the Diocesan Capacity Building Center, organized and led by catechist coordinators Fr. Felix Soe Win and Fr. Isidore.
On May 4, the opening day, Msgr. Pius Win Than delivered the opening address. Sessions included “Thoughts and Responsibility” by Mr. Saw San Day from KMSS Pathein, and “A Respectable Leader” by Mr. Isidore, CBCM–SPCU Program Coordinator.

From May 9 to May 11, a retreat for spiritual preparation was conducted under the leadership of Fr. William Soe Min Thu. The program concluded with the Thanksgiving Mass on May 12, commissioning the three catechists and sending them forth for service.
The renewal training stands as a vital effort to strengthen catechetical ministry in the Diocese of Pathein, ensuring that catechists are equipped spiritually and practically to proclaim the Gospel in their communities.
