The Taste of God’s Word and the Heart of a Child

Have you ever tasted God’s Word? Not just read it—but actually tasted it? Ezekiel ate the scroll given to him. It was filled with hard truths—lamentations and woe. But in his mouth, it became sweet as honey. The Word of God, even when it challenges us, nourishes and sustains us when we truly receive it. Then Jesus does something surprising. The disciples argue about greatness. So Jesus calls a little child, places him in their midst, and says: “Unless you become like children, you will not enter the kingdom.” A child doesn’t demand status. A child doesn’t cling to control. A child simply trusts, receives, and loves without pretense. Today we remember St. Clare—a wealthy young woman who chose the poverty of San Damiano. She found true freedom not in riches, but in being small in God’s hands. She once said, “We become what we love.” So let us ask ourselves: Do we receive God’s Word like a sweet honey? Do we approach Him with the open hands of a child? Do we cling to our pride, or do we trust like Clare? This week, let go of needing to be “great.” Become small. Receive God’s Word with a simple heart. Let His sweetness fill you. Let His love shape you. For the Kingdom belongs to those who trust like children.
