Succession Ceremony and Chrism Mass Held in Hpa-An Diocese

The Episcopal handover ceremony and Chrism Mass of the Hpa-An Diocese took place at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral on March 28, marking the official transfer of pastoral authority from Bishop Justin Saw Min Theid to Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko.
Before the ceremony began, Vicar General Fr. Ignatius Nyan Htoo recalled the history and development of the diocese. The Diocese of Hpa-An was established on December 3, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI, who appointed Bishop Justin as its first bishop. The creation was a long-awaited milestone, with His Eminence Cardinal Charles Bo later sharing that he had prayed for its establishment on Mount Zwegabin, a symbol of Kayin State.
For decades, the Hpa-An region has endured armed conflict and instability, which hindered development in education, healthcare, transportation, and the economy. The region also hosts more than ten refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border, with over 500,000 displaced persons in Kayin State.
Despite these challenges, during his 17 years of service, Bishop Justin made significant contributions. These included the construction of parish churches, clergy houses, convents, boarding houses, parish halls, and over 70 kindergarten facilities. A new parish dedicated to St. Michael was established, and land was acquired for mission expansion. He also sent three priests for higher studies and supported the education of more than 400 young people annually before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Having reached the age of 75, Bishop Justin retired in accordance with the canon law.

The Handover
The ceremony continued with the formal reading of the appointment letter from Rome by Chancellor Rev. Fr. Anselm Nay Zaw Oo. Bishop Justin then led Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko to the episcopal chair, symbolizing the transfer of pastoral authority.
Following this, representatives of the clergy, religious brothers and sisters, diocesan elders, and lay organizations—including St. Vincent de Paul, the Legion of Mary, the Women’s Association, youth leaders, and the Missionary Holy Childhood—professed their obedience to the new bishop.

Homily of Bishop Stanislaus
In his homily, Bishop Stanislaus expressed gratitude to God and thanked Bishop Justin for his 17 years of dedicated service. Acknowledging his own unworthiness, he emphasized that his appointment was made possible through the prayers, participation, and collaboration of the faithful.

Reflecting on the Chrism Mass, he highlighted the unity of the priestly community and the renewal of priestly vows. He noted that priests are chosen from among the people to serve the people, following Christ, who came “not to be served, but to serve.”
He underscored the dignity of the priesthood and spoke about the challenges priests face, quoting Pope Leo XIV on the hidden struggles known only to God. The bishop emphasized the importance of obedience, unity, and sacramental fraternity between the bishop and his priests.

Renewal of Vows
Following the homily, the priests of the diocese renewed their priestly vows. The blessing of the Holy Oils was then carried out according to the prescribed liturgical rites.

In his concluding remarks, Bishop Stanislaus thanked God for abundant graces. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his parents—especially his mother, who is still living—and to all the faithful for their prayers and support. He also extended special thanks to Bishop Justin for his continued guidance and prayers.
