Mandalay Archdiocese Honors U Myint Wai for Three Decades of Service to the Legion of Mary

More than 300 members of the Legion of Mary gathered at a private residence on April 18 to honor U Myint Wai, a benefactor whose nearly 30 years of logistical and financial support have sustained the apostolic group’s missions across Myanmar.

The Thanksgiving and Honor Mass at U Myint Wai’s home in Chanthargone Village was presided over by Fr. Paul Thet Khaing, Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary. Members traveled from various parishes to pay tribute to a man widely regarded as a pillar of their work.

A Legacy of Support

Sr. Melanie Mi Chit Yin, a member of the organizing committee, said the decision to honor U Myint Wai was met with unanimous enthusiasm.

“U Myint Wai has been the benefactor of this apostolic group for nearly thirty years,” Sr. Melanie said. “We felt it was essential to host this grand celebration to formally express our deep gratitude before the current leadership transition.”

Spiritual Reflections

In his homily, Fr. Paul described U Myint Wai as a man of “exceptional character, defined by love and humility.” He recalled how the benefactor would meticulously arrange food, lodging, and transport for youth training sessions and religious festivals, often catering to massive crowds without hesitation.

“As representatives of Mary, we must remain humble and extend God’s love even to those who oppose us,” Fr. Paul told the Legionaries.

A ‘Gift from God’

Dorothy Thi Thi Min, President of the Legion of Mary, called U Myint Wai a “gift from God,” particularly during periods of hopelessness. His support enables the Legion’s dual mission of prayer—interceding for the sick and conflict-affected—and action, including pastoral visits to prisoners and those estranged from the faith.

Fr. John Eudes Aung Kyaw Khaing, Parish Priest of Chanthargone Parish, revealed that U Myint Wai also provides essential care and shelter for internally displaced persons taking refuge in Chanthargone.

“As priests, we often hesitate to ask for donations repeatedly,” Fr. Aung Kyaw Khaing said. “But Uncle U Myint Wai never refuses. He is a major pillar for the entire missionary work of the Mandalay Archdiocese.”

A Testimony of Faith

In a moving response, U Myint Wai attributed his business success and his ability to give to the intercession of the Blessed Mother.

“Legionaries are often people of modest means, yet they possess a spiritual peace that is priceless,” he said. “I decided 30 years ago to do everything I could for Mary’s work. Despite political instability and natural disasters, I remained focused on how to help this mission. For Mary, I am ready to give even my life.”
