Yangon Archdiocesan Youth Commission Holds Fourth “Than Zin San Yay” Gospel Song Competition

The fourth edition of the Than Zin San Yay (Melody Spring) Gospel Song Competition was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Yangon, on Sunday, June 28, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event was organized by the Yangon Archdiocesan Youth Commission to encourage and promote the musical talents of young Christians.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Yangon Archdiocesan Youth Commission, Rev. Fr. Mercian Thet Kyaw, explained that the competition was initiated because the Catholic community, especially its young people, had long been underrepresented in the field of music. He noted that very few Catholic singers have gained recognition in the secular music industry.

“Than Zin San Yay was created to nurture the musical gifts of our young people and provide them with opportunities to develop their talents,” Fr. Mercian said. “Over the past years, three or four participants have gone on to become professional singers. This encourages us to continue the program.”
This year’s competition was expanded beyond the Catholic community by inviting young people from other Christian denominations. Participants came from the Catholic, Baptist, Seventh-day Adventist, Methodist, and Anglican Churches, reflecting the organizers’ desire to promote Christian fellowship through music and praise.

Fr. Mercian said that a total of 75 contestants registered for this year’s competition. They have been divided into three groups, with preliminary rounds taking place over three consecutive Sundays.
During the first preliminary round on June 28, 22 contestants performed before a panel of judges. Thirteen contestants were selected to advance to the next stage. The remaining two preliminary rounds will be held on the following two Sundays.
After all three preliminary rounds, 40 contestants will qualify for the next stage. From them, 20 finalists will be selected, and eventually 10 contestants will compete in the grand final. Winners of the first, second, and third prizes will receive special recognition.

The competition was judged by well-known Myanmar Christian singers Nwe Yin Win, Than Thar Win, and Nay Nay.
Than Zin San Yay program continues to serve as a platform for nurturing young Christian musicians, strengthening praise and worship, and encouraging talented youth to share their gifts both within the Church and in the wider society.
The event, now in its fourth year, has become a significant fixture in Yangon’s Christian community, providing emerging musicians with both exposure and professional development opportunities.
